...Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, and there to go on alert, ready to fly to Haiti to help evacuate the thousands of U.S. citizens there, should that become necessary. It might not be necessary, though. At week's end, Lieut. General Raoul Cedras, head of the Haitian army, and Joseph Michel Francois, chief of police, gave some indications that they were turning conciliatory. Both were supposed to step down Friday, to pave the way for Aristide's return. Neither did, and Lawrence Pezzullo, Clinton's special adviser on Haiti, told reporters after a meeting with Cedras that the general had given...
...NATO's Role I totally disagree with Joseph Joffe about NATO [March 30]. It should have been disbanded when the Warsaw Pact was dissolved. NATO (or should that be the U.S.?) has started many of the recent wars, using Sept. 11 as an excuse, and dragged its allies into expensive and - as will eventually be proved - fruitless wars. Russia is neither a threat to Europe nor the rest of the world, however, bringing NATO to its borders is provocative. Would the U.S. be happy if Russia made military alliances with Canada or Mexico? In February, as Ving Rhames was wrapping Master Harold . . .and the Boys - a film about the relationship between a white boy and his black servant - Damon and Freeman arrived...
...Kennedy School typically asks its commencement speakers to discuss the value of a career in public service, according to Joseph J. McCarthy, the director of degree programs. He speculated that Sebelius may have been selected in part because of her connection to the Department of Health and Human Services, an area in which Kennedy School Dean David T. Ellwood ’75 served during the Clinton administration. McCarthy added that Sebelius’ policy interests coincide with many hot topics at the Kennedy School, such as education policy and health care...
...negotiate ransoms or take military action. The International Seafarers Action Center (ISAC) in the Philippines says 122 Filipino seafarers are currently being held captive, which includes the 23 onboard the MV Stolt Strength, a Japanese-owned chemical tanker that was hijacked on Nov. 10 last year. ISAC secretary-general Joseph Entero says the ship's owner is unwilling to pay ransom, the hostages' families are being given little information, and the government is not doing enough. "[The government calls] our overseas workers the modern-day heroes of the Philippines because of the remittances they send home," he says...
