It is a slow and "trippy" number, with LeBon's muted voice welcoming the listener to Medazzaland, whatever Medazzaland is. This is not the Duran Duran of our youth; it is, instead, a slowed down electronic journey to an indeterminate place. Although it doesn't get us gyrating in the aisles, it'll keep you listening, if only to question, what caper the boys have gotten themselves involved...
...visual terms, the Sisters (Rachel McGregor '00, Fay Ferency '99, and Josh Cohen '97) are well cast. Clad in black, naturally, and wearing satyr masks of white make-up, with their hair twisted and gelled into unnatural little projections, they look like a cross between elves and goth ravers. The Sisters' numbers are executed with a maximum of modern-dance movement to accompany them, and they play some marvelous tricks with a large black satin blanket...
...another dysfunctional-family Thanksgiving drama, this time with a little incest and crises of identity thrown in. Josh Hamilton plays a troubled fellow who brings home his supremely normal fiancee (Tori Spelling, who's surprisingly good in this sugar-cookie role) only to confront the ghost of his past in his sister, "Jackie O" (a delightfully demented Parker Posey), who sports an obsession with the JFK assassination among her myriad kooky charms. What makes this setup more than just a gimmicky grab-bag for originality is its success in mixing the familiar and the disturbing in the composition...
Think of an old-dark-house party catered by Noel Coward. A place as creepy as the Pascals' needs a virgin sacrifice, and that would be Lesly (Tori Spelling), a waitress engaged to the young master of the house, Jackie-O's twin Marty (Josh Hamilton). He's halfway between normal and nuts, while Jackie lives in lunacy as if it were the garden room at high tea. Her favorite delusion is that she is Jacqueline Kennedy on the day of her husband's death. She's just a bit confused about the identity of the assassin...
