...That's what he wants to be too - but not the overnight variety. "I want people to think I'm an interesting actor," says the intriguing guy du jour. "I just hope they slowly, slowly, slowly, slowly discover that over the next 10 years." It may be too late for a gradual buildup. He has already made an impression on Hollywood. A featured role in "Black Hawk Down" led to "The Hulk." Now he is shooting Wolfgang Petersen's "Troy", in which he plays Hector to Brad Pitt's Achilles - and that role could make Bana next year's June...
When it comes to evaluating risks, both ordinary people and policymakers tend to be wildly inefficient. Remember that in the 1970s, intelligence officials, preoccupied with communism, discounted the threat posed by Islamic fundamentalism. The lesson: Ignored threats often pose more serious threats to global stability than the fears du jour. So with SARS and terrorism now dominating headlines and our worry space, it's worth pondering what threats have been squeezed out. Maybe nobody told Martin Scorsese the American film epic was a dead form. Or maybe Scorsese was too stubborn to give up a project he had nurtured since 1970, when the epic was still the genre du jour and, on Belfast's mean streets, Protestants and Catholics were spilling one another's blood in a replay of the New York City Irish-Anglo gang wars of the 1860s, which Scorsese was itching to dramatize. "This season our truffle sales have doubled," says Covell. Event producer Francesca Abbracciamento, of Francesca Events, whose clients include Bill Clinton and Conan O'Brien, says, "Truffles have replaced the chocolate-dipped strawberry as the quintessential, elegant petit four." The treat is even being adapted for the health conscious. Veganstore.com...
With so much in the films codified and inviolable, part of the charm lies in the fresh ideas and small tweaks that Wilson and Broccoli allow. The danger du jour, for instance, comes straight out of the headlines. "The films have adapted to make them relevant to the contemporary world," says Michael Harvey, curator of "Bond, James Bond," an exhibition of 007 cars, gadgets and memorabilia at London's Science Museum. From Russia with Love (1963) arrived at the height of the cold war; Moonraker (1979) took off at the zenith of the Star Wars craze; and in Die Another...
