Active in neighborhood groups, the Harvard mathematics preceptor is the editor of the Cambridge Civic Journal. Winters wants to amend zoning laws to allow more housing units, invest in long-term projects for a new library and police station, and preserve the system of professional city management and the proportional representation election system...
...year-old publishing industry, dot.com advertising has been a stay of execution for some and a heady reinforcement of the power of the printed word for others. "It's the greatest opportunity and the greatest threat," says Scott Donaton, editor of Advertising Age. At the Wall Street Journal, where dot.coms flock to woo potential investors, ad revenues jumped 32% in the third quarter. Last week scientists offered what could be the first really strong ray of hope in their struggle against this relentless killer. In a report in the journal Science, the gene-splicing wizards at Amgen, one of biotechnology's most successful companies, announced that they had succeeded in identifying and isolating a long-sought enzyme--a so-called protease--that may play a key role in creating the biochemical chaos in the brain that causes Alzheimer...

"These are either the earliest or among the earliest dinosaurs known," comments University of Pennsylvania paleontologist Neil Shubin. The scientists also found fossils of eight other primitive animals, some of which are a key to the evolution of mammals, which arose at about the same time as the dinosaurs...

A typical sampling of Falwell's rhetoric is the July edition of his National Liberty Journal, in which he wrote that we cannot "blame" genetics for "adultery, homosexuality, dishonesty and other character flaws." Most famously, Falwell urged parents to avoid the British children's program "Teletubbies" because one character, Tinky-Winky, is purple and has an inverted triangle on his head which made him a subversive...
