...leaves him helpless in the face of the aggressive global marketplace; his dissolute nephew, rebelling after years of frustrated obedience; and his daughter, a young woman becoming keenly aware of her sexual power. Such drama could easily veer into soap opera, but Chowdhury uses his experience as a business journalist to turn the machinations of finance into the stuff of suspense, elegantly connecting the shadowy moneylenders of Mumbai to the gleaming towers of Hong Kong and New York City. In one set piece at a dinner party in a Hong Kong high-rise, Chowdhury cracks open the insular world...
...weeks ago a group of Pakistani journalists and foreign correspondents based in Pakistan gathered to meet visiting representatives of the Washington-based think tank Center for American Progress. Its members were "on a listening tour," they said, and wanted to hear the journalists' perspectives on the U.S. and Pakistan. The response was caustic. Correspondents and editors belonging to Pakistan's top local print and TV outlets let loose with accusations and complaints, particularly about American concerns that Pakistan was failing as a state. ...orders of the special death squad formed by former US vice-president Dick Cheney ... The squad was headed by General Stanley McChrystal, the newly-appointed commander of US army in Afghanistan." Those chosen represent a diverse cross-section of the industry, from newspaper editors and photographers to multimedia reporters and radio journalists. This year’s class included the largest proportion of freelance journalists in the 72-year history of the fellowship. “The selection of more freelance journalists and fewer newspaper reporters reflects the changing nature of journalism,” said Nieman Foundation Curator Robert H. Giles...
...those blue-sky, Sydney summer afternoons early last year when I first realized something had gone awry with the Australian flag. The date was Jan. 26, 2008 - Australia Day. I'd just returned to Sydney as a freelance journalist after some years in New York City and was having lunch at a pub in the beachfront suburb of Newport when an uneasy, skin-prickling moment dawned. Around me were hundreds of young white men and women, many of them drunk, chanting the national war cry - "Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, oi oi oi!" Almost all were sporting the Australian flag...
