Songs for a Smoke-Filled Room (Elsa Lanchester; Hifirecords LP). A fey, offbeat collection of songs both sprightly and shivery by the apricot-haired English comedienne, with tongue-in-jowl introductions by husband Charles Laughton. The selections range from Fiji Fanny, a raucous burlesque of the songs the trade calls "grass-skirt numbers," to a haunted, spine-crawling ditty titled If You Peek in My Gazebo, which tells the tale of a mad New England spinster who sits each evening in a summerhouse on the hill secretly watching the lusty young village bucks stroll...
...thumb to seek sin with a beautiful blonde lady. In due course, for one reason or another, he and the lady, her husband's nephew and a lady's maid, the husband himself, and a family friend with four innocent golden-haired daughters, are all cheek-by-jowl or better in a Paris fleabag. Although it is quite obvious that U Nu knew what he was doing, a family newsmagazine is hardly the proper place for this bust-by-jowl juxtaposition of the traditionally quiet Eastern dress and the pseudo-Eastern undress...
...know how Lev came to invent the foam-rubber rims he put in his caps. The capmaker said that the answer was not for ladies to hear. Bender insisted. Lev bent over the Senator and whispered loudly: "Made out of the same stuff they make falsies of." Standing jowl to jowl with Senator Bender, Lev put on an impromptu fashion show, whipping sample hats on and off his head. Bender was curious about Lev's "social" relationship with Mrs. Mella Hort, ex-contract administrator in the Defense Department who had testified that she had visited Lev's hotel...
