This is primarily because it uses brilliantly these disconnected incidents and scenes to create the indefinable and intangible something commonly called "mood": here a sentimental, nostalgic mood comprehensive enough to include both joy and sorrow. This is also because it includes unusually moving and sympathetic performances from all of the principals, most of whom are newcomers to featured parts.
