Devil in the Flesh owes much of its power as well to the direction of Claude Autan-Lara, which heightens the drama of the tale without sacrificing its subtlety. Even in contrasting the joy of the Armistice with the pathos of the young woman's death, the film skirts mawkishness and makes the bereavement of the lover more deeply felt. But above all, the intensity of Devil in the Flesh is due to the performances of Gerard Philipe and Micheline Presle.
