...began to work her acres with joy, only to find that her land was literally a washout. Every summer, just before harvest time, the ocean burst over the whole farm and destroyed the crops. The first time Ma saw it happen, a little of her reason was carried away too. Against all advice, she borrowed to the limit of her credit and built a sea wall to keep the ocean out. But in one season, the crabs ate through the mangrove pilings, and one night the sea carried everything away. Soon after, Ma began to throw fits...
...article "Benedictine v. Trappist" I was very much impressed by the criticism of Thomas Merton by Dom Aelred Graham. I do not imagine that Father Graham has read Ascent to Truth by Merton; if he has, let him notice Chapter 14. Here are some excerpts: "He pours out His joy upon the whole world through the chosen," and "they all recognize in practice that infused contemplation is a gift of God and the best way for a man to dispose himself for this gift is renunciation and humility." Today I'll make twelve, thirteen, fourteen thousand dollars-but it doesn't seem to matter...
...sheet before a fire, a good Samaritan carrying a patient across a bridge, and a shepherd with his flock. At the source of the stream a couple roams blissfully in the paradise they have found at journey's end. In its quiet mixture of suffering, hope and joy, the window is altogether appropriate to the hospital setting. The wet light that falls through the colored glass is suggestive less of tears than of cleansing rain...
