...More importantly, the films are, by and large, terrific?a joyous surprise for those who thought the movies might be dusty artifacts, suitable for their time but not ours. That opera film, for example: The Kingdom and the Beauty from 1959, is the sweet, poignant saga of a young Emperor (Zhao Lei) who falls in love with a commoner (Lin Dai), then leaves her to languish in noble Back Street fashion. As for the opera aspect, the dialogue is mostly spoken; and the tunes include one that sounds spookily like a rap song...

...slightly naughty song - the only tune that conjures up the joyous anarchy of early John Waters movies - is not in the show. I suspect that someone urged cutting it because the more sensitive souls in the audience thought it too ugly to be funny. It is on the CD, though, hiding 11 seconds after the end of the final song. "Blood on the Pavement" is a parody of 50s-60s public-service jingles and is delivered with a perky confidence that makes the message ever so much more ghoulish. It is good to be joyous in the presence of her spirit, because I hope she had moments of joy in what must have been a grueling life. This much is true: Sacagawea died of some mysterious illness when she was only in her 20s. Most illnesses were mysterious in the 19th century, but I suspect that Sacagawea's indigenous immune system was defenseless against...

...this side can play, so effervescent and joyous and tireless. Then you read the names on the backs of the jerseys. Reality check. All that sleep must have dulled your brain cells. These guys are Japanese. You're not one to stereotype, but the last time you checked, Japan was a land of pachinko-playing automatons, dull conformists who wear uniforms to work and school, and who never, ever jaywalk. When did they start having fun? When did they all become blond...
