OLIVER! A gleaming, steaming, rum plum pudding of a musical. Dickens' sociological sting is gone, but in its place is a Christmas package of breathtaking sets, period costumes, and a full-throated, joyous score by Lionel Bart. Best of a twinkling cast are Ron Moody as Fagin and a Toby jug of a boy named Jack Wild as The Artful Dodger...

Reimer's attorney argued that "a child is not a liability, but rather a joyous event. A child is an asset that brings happiness fully compensating for any material damages." Last month a court in Schleswig-Holstein disagreed. While declaring that the Knacks had "a general responsibility to check what they bought," the court ruled that Reimer was negligent and ordered him to pay half the cost of the boy's upbringing until Thomas reaches 18. "Grotesque," said Reimer's attorney about the decision, which appeared to be the first of its kind either in West Germany...

Claes Oldenburg's liquidly drooping Giant Soft Fan is, among other things, a gently nostalgic evocation of times past -since, after all, air conditioning is more common nowadays. Jean Tinguely's joyous black Rotozaza, No. 1 tosses out colored balls and then sucks them back in again, a mystifying process intended as a sardonic parody of the production-consumption cycle. Baldaccini Cesar took his revenge on a high-powered yellow Buick by crushing it into a monolithic, totally stationary monument with...

...despite these loopholes (no doubt to be remedied during the Boston run), Zorba stands as a nearly finished product. Prince has woven just about all of the show's components into his unifying conception. Ronald Field's joyous choreography is so tightly linked to the staging, that it's hard to believe Prince did not devise the dances himself. Don Walker's orchestrations, a precise blend of Greek and Broadway instrumentation, flood the theatre with frenzies of rhythm, adding as much to the atmosphere as Boris Aronson's simplistically beautiful sets...

...Beatles, the beat, were the agony by which an entire generation was to be turned on to the energy of their bodies, the energy of their long repressed desires and fantasies. The Beatles were a catalvst that released a tremendous amount of wild exuberant joyous energy. The young girls that dreamed about them learned something about themselves. But there had always been teen idols. Far more important was the sheer joy their music and their larking about communicated to anyone who would listen and watch. That energy, that joy was in all of us. And all it took...
