This was one of the primary questions addressed at a symposium on the New England Holocaust Memorial yesterday at Faneuil Hall. Among the panelists were Associate Professor of Government Daniel J. Goldhagen '81; James E. Young, associate professor of English and Judaic Studies at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst; Margot Stern Strom, executive director of the educational non-profit organization Facing History and Ourselves; and Leonard Zakim, regional director of the Anti-Defamation League...
Ethiopian Orthodoxy is a curious amalgam of Judaic and Christian practices, African and European rituals. It is manifestly a man's religion: only males may enter the inner sanctuary where it is claimed Moses' Ark is hidden. No one knows anyone who has actually seen it, but the pilgrims are certain it is there. "They don't have to let people see it for us to believe it," says a gnarled elder. "That's the mystery." Or, to quote Cross' strange characterization, Stager's "whole history is philo-Judaic...
Stager's whole history is philo-Judaic. Part of his graduate training was taken at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem; he was a fellow of the Institute for Advanced Studies of the Hebrew University. In his early years he was a beloved protege of Benjamin Mazar, the doyen of Israeli archaeologists. Stager was awarded one of he largest and richest of the pristine archaeological sites left in Israel by the Israeli Council on Archaeology. To pair Stager with Lowell is unconscionable, and Peretz should publicly apologize, or in any case repudiate the anti-Semitic interpretation generally and most plausibly given...
