Thanks chiefly to the dramatic nature of the trial and execution not long ago of Ruth Snyder and Judd Gray, the question of capital punishment has come up again. Much opinion has been aired, editorially and otherwise, and conclusions have been varied. From lively descriptions of ghostly apparitions in the prison, doctored up with as much sensationalism as possible, to thoughtful attempts to reach an ultimate judgment upon the whole problem by virtue of a particular example newspapers have treated the case from every conceivable aspect. And so the controversy is again aroused, with more than usual intensity this time...
...report spread through Pennsylvania last week that Robert Elliott, official executioner for Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and Massachusetts, had collapsed and resigned his posts after doing his lethal duty by Murderers Ruth Snyder and Judd Gray at Sing Sing Prison last fortnight. The report was false. Executioner Elliott had neither collapsed nor resigned. Nor did he collapse late last week when he pulled the switch that sent Leon Scovern, 20, to death for the murder of a sweetheart's brother...
...reputation of being stranger than fiction, but there can be little doubt that that honor was ill-deserved. From back pages of the daily journals, from "Whiz Bang", from the over-fertilized imaginations of the presumably witty, come combinations of words rarely before encountered. "Men Without Women", "Judd, Ruth and the Sashweight", "Browning and Three Peaches", just growed for the occasion. They could not have had a prior raison d'etre and we trust will sink into that impenetrable oblivion which we feel sure awaits them...
