...conservative Christians who worked so hard in the 1980s to make home schooling legal in every state are as committed as ever, but more politically moderate Christians have also joined the movement. Susie Capraro, who home schools her son and daughter, used to be part of the Broward County Parent Support Group, the largest home-schooling network in Florida and one founded on Judeo-Christian principles. Although she considers herself a Fundamentalist Christian, Capraro didn't like group rules that keep non-Christians from leadership roles--or other exclusionary gestures, like the ice skating event that featured only Christian music...

Consequently, the Koran, the inspired scripture that Muhammad brought to the Arabs, venerates the great prophets of the Judeo-Christian tradition. It speaks of Solomon's "great place of prayer" in Jerusalem, which the first Muslims called City of the Temple. Only after the Jews of Medina rejected Muhammad did he switch orientation and instruct his adherents to pray facing Mecca, whose ancient shrine, the Kabah, was thought by locals to have been built by Abraham and his son Ishmael, the father of the Arabs...

...Democratic candidates and the Republican presidential contender touting their religiosity [CAMPAIGN 2000, Aug. 21]. More worrisome, however, is the further contention that religion deserves a greater, rather than lesser, role in the body politic. Does this signal a new Puritanism, a return to politics of the Judeo-Christian tradition as interpreted by the politicians in power? Will our lives be governed by political leaders whose religious convictions we do not share? One can only hope that this is just more empty political rhetoric. JAMES BOYCE Skopje, Macedonia
