Lately, I've been reflecting most on the common judgement "no harm, no foul." The expression originated in the world of basketball to describe incidents of hacking, holding, pushing and the like which, though in violation of the rules, do not necessarily affect the score of the game. The phrase has rapidly spread from the sporting world to all areas of life. If you bump into someone in the street and apologize, the response is "no harm, no foul." If you're trying to explain a mistake you've made or a responsibility you've forgotten, it's handy...

...impeachment of former vice chair David A. Campbell '00 (as the article stated), as has secretary Michael K. T. Tan '01. Still, Tan's initial abstention was quite valid in that he had filled that position but two weeks before and could not possibly have been expected to register judgement so hurriedly. Campbell's flagrant lack of judgement in handling the election was somewhat of a last straw. What set the impeachment process rolling was his unfounded and utterly personal defilement of my co-chair Alena J. Williams '98, a Crimson editor, when she attempted to point out his failure to delegate a payment for our recent Moonraker ball, an action jeopardizing the association's fiscal security and our reputation. His assault was so brash and abusive that five Board members threatened resignation if the motion to impeach was not achieved...

Commentators on television round-tables ponder whether or not there was a "rush to judgement." Between advertisements for cat food and diarrhea medications, the assembled high priests of the journalism profession solemnly lament their dismal performance and vow to be more circumspect the next time they haul somebody's sex life into public view...
