Shocking? No. More a measure of the movie's originality. For, age difference aside, Hutton and Portman are perfectly matched ironists--''Romeo and Juliet, the dyslexic version," as she calls them--dealing with the largest irony of all, the fact that they dare not touch, let alone dream of fulfillment together. Their rue and wryness are characteristic of Scott Rosenberg's writerly script, the playing of their encounters typical of a fine acting ensemble and of Ted Demme's discreet yet forceful direction. Beautiful Girls is always in touch with reality but never drowned...

SHAKESPEARE: Today audiences like their Shakespeare straight up. But theatergoers centuries earlier preferred "improved" versions, including Romeo and Juliet with a non-Kervorkian resolution. Among Shakespeare's self-appointed co-writers was the now forgotten Nahum Tate (1652-1715), who cut and pasted his way through Coriolanus, Richard II and, most notoriously, King Lear, to whom Tate restored sanity, crown and daughter Cordelia before the curtain fell. That and everything from free checking to discount airline coupons are designed to lure people like Juliet Kaz, a Security Pacific customer who complains of long lines and new charges since the takeover. But like many depositors, she says, "I'm lazy, and it's a hassle to change checking accounts," even though a Glendale Federal branch is just across the street...

...Francisco. Leading Prokofiev's slight, charming fable The Love for Three Oranges, he managed to find wit and poetry in an opera that is often little more than the famous March. Even more impressive was his way with a stripped-down, hopped-up Romeo and Juliet, Prokofiev's great ballet. Designed by the Belgrade-born underground-comic-book illustrator Enki Bilal and choreographed by Angelin Preljocaj, this Romeo takes place in a Mad Max universe where the Capulets and the Montagues are fascist thugs and street ragamuffins, and Juliet sports a bustier whose exaggerated nipples fairly scream "radical Eurotrash reinterpretation...
