There's more coming. Caesars Palace plans to open Caesars Magical Empire, with no fewer than three theaters. What's going on? Elvis died, and it takes a platoon of rabbit tuggers to fill his jumpsuit? I think the answer is pretty simple. People go to Vegas to see something they can't see back home. They can see comedians at the mall, celebrities on TV, singers doing hit songs repeatedly in whatever-VH-1-is videos...

Then came an Elvis movie which dated before the White Jumpsuit Era. Kissin' Cousins had something to do with two Elvis almost-look-alikes (one Elvis was supposed to be a red-head) living in the Appalachians. This film had, of course, the quintessental jug of moonshine ("where's the three x's?!" others in the room cried); the quintessential mopey hound dog, and the quintessential King crooning to two young females. A Wallace outing, in short, is like a scene from the current Tom Cruise movie about stock-car racing, Days of Thunder. And no wonder: Wallace is the world-champion...

...typical Monday morning, the neatly dressed mothers gather on living- room sofas for a counseling session led by Thomas. Longtime residents express unfettered affection for their tall, slim mentor, dressed today in a red jumpsuit, brown tweed jacket, black high heels and silver bracelets. "She doesn't judge you from what others say, she judges you from what you say and do," says Monique Gray, a Mandela House veteran of one year. "You can't fool % Minnie," four-month resident Patricia Rodgers admits...
