There are an estimated 80,000 vessels of all kinds plying the South Vietnamese coasts. The Junk Patrol is reported to conduct 12,000 searches per month. This would mean each boat is searched only 1.8 times a year. If a gun carrier is approached by a South Vietnamese vessel intent on a search, what would be simpler than slipping the evidence quietly over the side? Robert Rauschenberg, 39, has already established himself as a pop hero by exhibiting a stuffed goat, his own bed, and lumps of genuine Fulton Street dirt as art, and picked up the 1964 Venice Biennale's International First Prize for painting with his silk-screen images taken from newsphotos.
