...PROBLEMS MAR Bradford's approach to the text. Why, for instance, has he not cut the distracting subplots often excluded in contemporary productions--such as the hackneyed drinking scenes between Caliban and minor characters Trinculo and Stephano, or the awkwardly staged scene in which the goddesses Iris, Ceres and Juno appear? These types of passages have little charm and distract the audience from the more important issues of the play. Bradford could have populated his huge stage in other ways...

Your retelling of D-day reminded me of my landing on Juno Beach with the Canadian 3rd Division. My first contact with the French occurred when I encountered the village cure. He had a sour look, perhaps because a shell had torn a hole in the spire of his 17th century church. "Bonjour, Monsieur le Curé," I greeted him. "Are you happy that we have come?" "Yes," he replied, "but I will be happier when you leave." Memories like this give me mixed emotions when I march with my fellow veteran survivors...
