...Abbott Theatre (so called because Mr. Samuel Abbott is the director of the Juno and the Paycock now at the Loeb) is not, to be sure, the Abbey Theatre; but even on its own terms its new Juno is curiously lackluster. Not that it's poor--how could it be with actors like Andreas Teuber and Kenneth Tigar (or with a director like Abbott)--but why oh why isn't it any better...

...Plough and the Stars (by Sean O'Casey) stands in the very first rank of modern plays. Among O'Casey's own, only Juno and the Paycock can challenge it; but though Juno has more memorable characters and richer comedy, its tragedy is dented with willful, stagy melodrama, where in The Plough and the Stars, tragedy and comedy are locked in an unshatterable embrace. William Hickey and Clifton James make a fine Laurel & Hardy team out of Trinculo and Stephano. Anne Fielding. Rae Allen, and Sada Thompson look pretty and sing well (particularly Miss Allen) as the goddesses Iris, Ceres, and Juno in the brief but beautiful Jonsonian masque arranged by Prospero. Lee Hoiby's incidental music is admirable, though his songs lack distinction. Robert Fletcher's set and costume designs and Tharon Musser's lighting are suitable...
