...tightening market for indie films, Fox Searchlight is that rare ministudio that's on a roll, with breakout hits like Little Miss Sunshine and Juno. Searchlight president Peter Rice saw the magic the movie had on its viewers: "It's like they've discovered such a unique experience, they immediately want to share it with other people." Late-summer screenings at the Telluride and Toronto film festivals got a rapturous response, and Searchlight quickly pegged it as a November release, with eyes on critics' awards and the Oscars. Created by Diablo Cody (Juno), Tara is funny, fascinating and frustrating. As in Cody's pregnancy comedy, too many characters speak the same pop-culturese, and each persona is a flat-out clich. But family members' interaction with the alters is believable: you get a real sense that they're accustomed to Tara's condition, having developed different strategies for dealing with each alter. The problem is that the show is too determined to play up its oddity, down to having Tara change costume with every transformation, which actually detracts from Collette's amazing character shifts--she adopts...

...Rose, Julie Christie as an Alzheimer's sufferer in Away from Her and Cate Blanchett's Bob Dylan impression in I'm Not There). It has already made more than what 2008's film drama winner, Atonement, had cadged by this time last year. Remember that Juno came out of nowhere a year ago and revved up to a $143 million domestic gross. Not that Slumdog has her wide appeal, but once in a while moviegoers look beyond the blockbusters and latch on to an exotic alternative. They might even learn something, like, Hey, they do make good movies...
