Taiwan's present dilemma really began in 1949, when Chiang Kai-shek and his central government in exile moved to Taipei. After Peking entered the Korean War in 1950, President Truman helped secure the island from Communist conquest by interposing the U.S. Seventh Fleet between Taiwan and the mainland-an act incidentally that also prevented the Nationalists from trying to reconquer China.
