Twenty years ago he eloped with Princess Louise of Saxe- Coburg-und-Gotha, daughter of Leopold II of Belgium, wife of Prince Philippe of Saxe-Coburg-und-Gotha, mother-in-law of the late Kaiserin's brother, Duke Ernst Günther. He was at once imprisoned on a charge of forgery; she was shut up in an asylum. Six years later, he carried out an abduction of the Princess.
