...tough customer. He scoffed at a counterproposal by President Reagan for eliminating medium- range nuclear missiles by 1990 and, along the way, displayed a penchant for bareknuckle bullying reminiscent of Nikita Khrushchev. Indeed, the General Secretary showed little inclination to tone down his anti-U.S. rhetoric. Quoting Karl Marx, he described capitalism as a "hideous pagan idol, who would not drink nectar but from the skulls of the slain." The U.S., he declared, is "the metropolitan center of imperialism." In part such pronouncements were intended to appease the party's Old Guard, some of whom are still suspicious...

...reveal themselves. One thinks of the buds and pods that crop up in Paul Klee's watercolors, some of which are fanciful illuminations of Goethe's ideas about the Urpflanze, or "primal plant"; or of the extraordinary images of tiny natural structures taken in the 1920s by photographers like Karl Blossfeldt, in which a seedcase can rear up like a Gothic tower, suggesting all manner of analogies to architecture. ...rock band attempting to cross over into the field of Lechmere background music, was formed by vocallist Terry Hall, formerly of the Specials (a decent two-tone band) and Fun Boy Three (a synth outfit that gave the Go-Gos their first hit, "Our Lips Are Sealed.") With bassist Karl Shale and guitarist Toby Lyons, Hall strikes out after something different with this group, and regrettably...

...consolidation of the Yugoslavian state under Tito. The story is told in part through the eyes of Malik, the son of an aspiring Communist Party officer. Malik's Father's "business trip" (as a forced laborer) begins when a political cartoon appears in the party newspaper. The cartoon shows Karl Marx writing at a desk, with a picture of Tito on the wall behind him. Father--known as Mesa in the film--mentions in passing to his mistress that the cartoon is somewhat extreme, a crime for which she later reports...
