But his aunt suddenly hangs herself and leaves him the house. Strangely, he cannot bring himself to sell the old thing, and is drawn back into the evil vortex...
Once in the nasty nest, Katt quickly realizes his predicament and enlists the aid of his neighbor, played by the hilariously deadpan Wendt. Armed with a harpoon gun and wearing goggles, Harold and Katt, himself clad in army greens and jump boots, approach the evil closet. However, in the process of hunting monsters, Katt is pulled through the door and carried back to Vietnam where he discovers that a dead soldier buddy of his has been the root of all his residential difficulties. (I swear. This is for real.) All turns out well, amazingly enough, and the flick winds...
...really a success. Especially in the first half, several scenes take too long to get to the point, which often turns out to be not very sharp. There are also gag sequences that could easily have been richer and more firmly developed. But Tom Berenger and William Katt are persuasive as the younger look-alikes of Newman and Redford (the latter's mannerisms are even gently parodied by Katt). When the pair finally get down to robbing banks and trains, their learner's clumsiness strikes an endearing note...
Toward the latter stages of First Love, Katt and Dey reveal that they have facial expressions in their repertoire other than the gaping, cow-like look of innocence that pervaded until then. Both actors begin to exhibit a fair amount of talent. Katt in particular allows his character to excogitate about the changes Elgin is undergoing with enough sang-froid to indicate that the soccer hero is gaining some perspective on life...
