MOVIES OR BOOKS about youth culture (and a host of other things, for that matter, like politics and social reality) can often be fairly judged by the critics they keep. When Stanley Kauffmann seizes on The Graduate as one of the most significant films ever made, you know something is amiss. Similarly when the press does chorus kicks for James Simon Kunen. Or when Pauline Kael hails Wild in the Streets. Scorecards of who likes what are less important when dealing with art works with little contemporary social content. Time thinks Persona is a masterpiece, but doesn't know...
Even before Barnes became drama critic, his appetite for theatrical performances was notorious. "If you dimmed the lights in a car," says a fellow critic, "Clive would have tried to review it." Two years ago, after Howard Taubman succeeded Brooks Atkinson and Stanley Kauffmann succeeded Taubman, the New York Times turned to Clive Barnes. His first reviews ran on heedlessly, as Barnes reviewed the theater, the audience, the seats. But by the following season he was as relaxed as an actor in the second year of a hit comedy, still babbling, but in the manner of a relaxed and witty...
...Bibi Anderson, and full-lipped Liv Ullman; be terrified by Hour of the Wolf and Persona, stilled by The Silence, and dragged naked through the fourteenth century in The Seventh Seal. But the distance remains -- the first six rows at the Brattle become an impassable Nordic wasteland. As Stanley Kauffmann said of The Silence, "The film is Bergman musing, and we have intruded...
Last week, for example, the Weyerhaeuser Co. teamed up with the Palo Alto, Calif., home-building firm of Brown & Kauffmann to start an $18 million residential community on the San Francisco peninsula at Los Gatos. Weyerhaeuser will invest more than $3,000,000 in its first venture in home building, and split profits with Brown & Kauffmann. Most of the money is to be borrowed from Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. at a rate (71%) well below that which the home-building firm might itself have had to pay. Though small companies still dominate the housing business, the trend is running clearly...
...other senior who will be ending his career today is backstroker Al Birch. Backstroke has been Harvard's weakest event ever since 1962 when Bob Kauffmann left, but this year was a little more encouraging. Birch, like Adams, had the ability to produce under pressure. Against Army, he won his event to keep Crimson hopes alive, and against Princeton his surprising second foiled a Tiger attempt to take the lead. In both meets he swam over his head to keep the team's chances alive...
