...Small Hours (by George S. Kaufman & Leueen MacGrath; produced by Max Gordon) is 26 scenes worth of life among big-shot Manhattan intellectuals. It displays them at sleek dinner parties, in cabs and sport cars, in offices and boudoirs, at smart restaurants and resorts. It shows them two-timing and double-crossing, ladling out flattery, dishing up scandal. It portrays in particular the Mitchell family-a brilliant, middle-aged publisher (Paul McGrath), his selfish daughter, his muddled son, and his wife Laura (Dorothy Stickney), who is clumsy and crushed in a world at once beyond and beneath her. But Laura...
Playwrights Kaufman & MacGrath (Mrs. Kaufman) have written the latest of many price-of-success stories. Appearances, they make clear, can be even more deceitful than their own hard worldlings -in the small hours, the worldlings themselves feel small and lonely. When the play displays the Kaufman gifts for satiric comment and social chatter, it is entertaining and, now & again, incisive. ...going is really smooth and the atmosphere really lively because Guys and Dolls belongs with the few musicals in any decade that can beam rather than swear at their librettos. Helped immensely at the source by Damon Runyon and in the staging by George S. Kaufman, the Jo Swerling-Abe Burrows book offers gags that don't seem like pressed four-leaf clovers, a lingo full of amusing genteelisms, humor that is disarming, good humor that is pervasive. Guys and Dolls would be virtually a model of its type if it were less insistent, or more convincing, about love...
...Keller, 64, the stocky and tough president of Chrysler Corp., was named director of guided missiles for the armed forces. K. T. (for Kaufman Thuma) Keller will keep his job at Chrysler, work three days a week without pay as special adviser to Defense Secretary George Marshall. The job was created because the Army, Navy and Air Force each had its own guided-missiles program, and they had long been tangled in overlapping, petty secrecies and inefficiency...
