...about toxic waste. It was there during his first presidential campaign, in 1988, when he twisted the facts when attacking Michael Dukakis and baited Dick Gephardt for flip-flopping on abortion, an issue on which Gore had flip-flopped. And it was there when he demolished Ross Perot, Jack Kemp and Bill Bradley in debates...

RAUL FERNANDEZ, 34 He can put a dollar figure on how much Washington has changed in a decade. In 1988, while serving as an up-and-coming aide to then Congressman Jack Kemp, Fernandez told his boss he wanted to quit Capitol Hill and start his own computer company. Kemp, stunned that Fernandez could think about leaving the epicenter of Washington political life, offered a major incentive to stay: "Stick around, and I'm sure I can get you another $4,000." Alomar was the John Rocker of the 1996 election cycle, a baseball player who'd done something so socially reprehensible as to call for a national morality check and force political candidates to take sides. The vice presidential contenders of the day, Al Gore and Jack Kemp, sounded off on what a bad example Alomar, then with the Baltimore Orioles, set by spitting in the face of umpire John Hirschbeck. Likewise, both George W. Bush and Al Gore have denounced Rocker, the Atlanta Braves pitcher, for his well-publicized invectives against gays, ethnic minorities and foreigners...

...past several elections, the vice-presidential candidates have had little or no impact. Jack Kemp utterly failed to create excitement for the 1996 Dole ticket, and Gore has a tough time being exciting about almost anything. In all fairness, Gore did a solid job in the 1992 vice presidential debates, but his presence on the ticket wasn't instrumental in President Clinton's election success...
