Doran Dole, the Senator's father, managed the Norris Grain Co. grain elevator and ran a small creamery, feed and seed business on the side. Bina Dole took in sewing to help out, and made many of the clothes for Robert, his brother Kenneth and his two sisters, Gloria and Jean. Recalls a neighbor: "The Doles just didn't have anything when the kids were growing up." To help out, Bob Dole jerked sodas after school at C.R. Dawson's for $1 a day. ...second-largest role--though much less than half the size of Rosalind's--belongs to the hero Orlando, the object of Rosalind's sporting. Kenneth Welsh makes him sufficiently fervent and brave. Orlando is Shakespeare's most athletic hero, and Welsh is stocky and muscular. But as staged here he certainly doesn't deserve the prize in the wrestling match, though this is not the reason the evil duke, in a nice touch, takes the purse of money away from him. ...lawsuit that finally precipitated the closing of the schools was filed in Jersey City in 1970 on behalf of Kenneth Robinson, 7. Like many other states, New Jersey has financed its schools largely by local property taxes. Young Robinson's lawyer argued that this system resulted in wide variations of expenditures and thus violated the constitution's "thorough and efficient" clause. In 1973 the state supreme court agreed with Robinson and charged the legislature to find other ways of financing the schools...
