Certainly the contours and resolution of the plot proved to be one of the most irresistible appeals of the film. No ambivalent finale lies in store for the moviegoer in search of escapism; aside from the necessary sacrifice of a leading hero (Alec Guinness' venerable elder, Ben Kenobi), the spacemen in white hats (or helmets) prevail in the end. A thoroughly unpretentious narrative, the story succeeds in assuring its audience that all modern movies need not be full of existentialist greys to attract reasonably discerning cineastes...

...nothing to compare them to. The lengthening of the ride on the Milennium Falcon is gratuitous because we know exactly how it should sound. Obi Wan wouldn't have expounded at such length on the nature of Han's character, and the new condition of the ship. Ben Kenobi's charm was that he always said enough, but never too much. Writer Brian Daley has given him too much baggage dialogue...

...script and meaningful character development, players are forced to rely on exaggerated gestures and movement to get their points across. Perhaps overemphasizing Merlyn's innocence, James Patterson, as the title character, remains wideeyed and blank-faced during most of the play. David Travis as Theloc, Merlyn's Obi-Wan Kenobi-like guru, manages to make the best of the show's most preposterous fortune-cookie-like lines. Sometimes, however, Travis, in an effort to maintain some sort of credibility for his character, acts too seriously. His furrowed eyebrows and deep voice only make it seem that Travis himself is holding...
