...form of socialist realism. But Czechoslovak intellectuals have a long tradition of fighting political authority, and even under Novotný they constantly pushed to extend the bounds of the permissible. They succeeded in getting a surprising number of their works published, but for the most part they wrote secretly, kept a rich lode of manuscripts in their desk drawers. Currently, the intellectuals are celebrating Dubček's promise to prevent any future censorship by taking them out again. "It is the end of an era," says Novelist Ludvik Vačulik, an editor of the journal Liter...

Freudian Art. Considerably less well known than pop art's debt to Dada is the seminal influence exercised by the surrealists on U.S. abstract expressionism. The relationship has been obscured until now, partly by the abstract expressionists themselves, who kept their early surrealistic canvases out of sight. The confusion was compounded by the fact that the original surrealist manifesto of 1924 envisioned two different techniques for applying Freud's then radical theories...

Constant Refrain. Whatever the Johnsonian moves meant, they stirred speculation and kept his name and image before the nation. In his speechmaking, the President touched frequently on the myriad crises that have overtaken his ill-starred Administration. Sensing the country's mood, the Roman Catholic Church demanded wider religious freedom. In a letter to Dubcek, Bishop Frantisek Tomasek of Prague called for the return to Czechoslovakia of Primate Josef Cardinal Beran, 79. Cardinal Beran, whom the Communists kept under house arrest for 14 years, agreed to leave the country in 1965 in exchange for party concessions to the church; he is now living in the Vatican. Without fully suppressing it, the party has harassed the church for 19 years, even appoints the priests for some dioceses. Bishop Tomasek's letter also asked Dubcek to begin...

...local little theater group. In due course, Steiger headed for Manhattan and the Actors Studio. He made his first hit as the original Marty on television, then scored in films as Marlon Brando's brother in On the Waterfront, for which he received his first Oscar nomination. Kept continually busy in movies, Steiger rarely has time for stage work. His longest run on Broadway was in the 1959 hit Rashomon; after the play closed, he married his costar, Claire Bloom. Between assignments, the Steigers live in an ar-tique-littered Manhattan apartment, where he dabbles in Sunday painting...
