...exception. Having contributed to the Father of the Bride soundtracks, Tyrell has decided to try his hand at a full length project, A New Standard, composed entirely of jazz standards (doubling, naturally, on producing duties). The execution is something fairly uneven. While works penned by Irving Berlin and Jerome Kern can never be truly faulted, Tyrell doesn't possess the vocal versatility to make them twinkle with true allure. "Give Me the Simple Life" caters to his scratchy vocals, but "On The Sunny Side of the Street," with its octave-plus range, proves to be a sufficient enough challenge that...
Freshmen will play a much more important role than Butler would like. Shaunte Edmunds, a 6'3 center, and 6'1 forward Beckie Fisher could see heavy minutes in the frontcourt. Highly-regarded guards Patricia Kern and Megan O'Neil will also probably be forced into some type of contributing role...
Haden's most recent album with his Quartet West, the ravishing The Art of Song (Verve), is a lyrical excursion across a landscape that embraces classical music (Rachmaninoff's Moment Musical), folk (Wayfaring Stranger), American popular song (Kern's In Love in Vain) and contemporary jazz (Jeri Southern's Theme for Charlie and Haden's own Ruth's Waltz). The only thing these disparate pieces have in common is Haden's singular vision, his insistence that this music beats with a single heart that pulses as steadily as his bass swings...
...latest, live album Art of the Trio 4: Back at the Vanguard, Mehldau wages his battle against jazz sophistry, playing everyone from Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein III ("All The Things You Are") to Radiohead ("Exit Music (For A Film)", the perfect Harvard-Yard-on-a-rainy-day ballad) to Miles Davis as well as many of his own originals. Not surprisingly, on this more rockin' than swingin' installment of the piano/bass/drum combination, not so much more than a few prickles of the late Evans can be felt. But so can a bit of the Well-Tempered counterpoint...
...second half began auspiciously for the Crimson when senior Mike Sands crushed Vena on an option keep, forcing a fumble that was recovered by junior defensive lineman R.D. Kern at the Colgate 45. The Crimson then went the distance in five plays, ending on a 15-yard touchdown run by senior tailback Chris Menick down the left sideline on an option play. Menick got a great block from the fullback to get to the corner. The score tied the game, 7-7, with 10:55 left in the quarter...
