William Wilder's Duo for String Quartet, another example of minimal performance instructions did not quite come off, perhaps because the players did not take full advantage of the near-complete rhythmical freedom they were given. John Cage's Six Melodies for Violin and Keyboard, which employs only eleven sounds, turned out to be a rather lame divertimento, though several Islamic touches near the end provoked cautious amusement...

Swathed in yards of bandages, mop-haired Pianist Van Cliburn, 24, walked shakily from a Manhattan hospital, an operation on the infected third finger of his right hand a success. Barred from the keyboard for at least two months, tireless Van, who has pounded away at some 90 concerts since his return from Russia last May, seemed almost resigned to trying a slower pace: "My doctor is trying to make me realize I must be more selfish, conserve my energy. ...Manhattan's Macy's, announced a deal with National Cash Register Co. for the first major automated system. Due to start whirring in 1961, the $1,000,000 system will speed Macy's customer-account billing 25-fold. By punching a few buttons on a keyboard, operators can register each of Macy's 40,000 daily charge sales on tape, which is later fed to a computer. It sorts the bills, tots them up, prepares the bills for the customer, registers the return payments. Macy's may even extend N.C.R.'s system to inventory...
