...wrote in a 1991 TIME tribute, Loesser was born into an educated German-Jewish family that prized classical music; his father was a piano teacher, his brother Arthur a keyboard prodigy and later a professor at the Cleveland Institute of Music. To the Loessers, popular music was infra dig, but Frank loved it. Like the cantor's son in The Jazz Singer, or pert Owl Jolson in the Tex Avery cartoon I Love to Sing-a, he had to battle his family's resistance to mainstream pop. Indeed, Loesser's nearly operatic score for The Most Happy Fella might have...

Despite advances in technology, typing may be the deciding success factor. The OQO2 differs from the FlipStart in featuring a slide-out keyboard rather than a traditional clamshell top that flips open for laptop-like input. "My mother forced me to take touch typing in high school, and I've always been glad for that," Allen says. He argues that the FlipStart's flat bottom lets users put it down to type comfortably...

...Massachusetts research company. An early review from eWeek derided the 1.75-lb., $1,999 FlipStart as "the three C's: cool, clunky and costly," while Infoworld called it "flat out unusable for work." Using it is a lot like handling a laptop with a shrunken screen and keyboard; it's fine for a few minutes, though you'll feel cramped working for a longer stretch. But there are strengths too. FlipStart has a handy mini outer screen for checking e-mail while the device is closed. And the OQO2 comes with an elegantly designed docking station that lets...

British firm PlayEngine is offering a line of flat-screen monitors (from $330), mice ($20) and keyboards ($30) housed in bamboo shells. Unlike plastic, bamboo is an eco-friendly, renewable material. A crop of this fast-growing grass eats up more CO2 than an equivalent field of trees, so farming it can help to reduce greenhouse gases. It also biodegrades easily and doesn't release any evil compounds when it's decomposing. However, that doesn't mean your keyboard will start decaying on your desk. All of the bamboo is dried and treated for bugs and infestations, resulting...

...second songs enticingly called “Non-Pythagorean Theorem Compositions.” As far as I can tell, these tracks (as well as the other eight sub-minute songs on the album) sound basically like a five year old stepping on a Casio keyboard. The band’s website claims that these sounds were made using a vintage vocoder and Paul McCartney’s tape machine from “McCartney 2,” but the result is still a 30-second track that distracts from the surrounding pop glory. Knowing that...
