...guard. And almost instantly thereafter, appeared the Communist high command: Mao Tse-tung himself, in a baggy unpressed cotton-padded blue cloak; Chu Teh, the Commander in Chief, in the orange-tan thick woolen uniform of a common soldier; Yeh Chien-ying, the Chief of Staff, in the smart khaki-colored wool uniform of an officer; and Chou Enlai, in a dingy brown leather coat. There were only four automobiles in Yenan then, and when Mao required one, his vehicle was a converted ambulance. Out of this ambulance they now rushed, trotting pell-mell to greet Franklin Roosevelt...
...ideas. Richard Nixon's lieutenants tried to protect Nixon from such intrusions. Within reason, Carter seems almost to welcome them. The White House operation is remarkably relaxed. Hamilton Jordan regularly dresses as if he were about to spend the afternoon quail hunting: sports shirt open at the neck, khaki work pants, heavy-duty boots. He, Jody Powell (shirtsleeves and vest), Zbigniew Brzezinski (baggy pants, Dagwood haircut) and others of the inner circle move calmly and freely in and out of the President's presence. Some joke. Wearing brown pants, a khaki shirt and a black beret with skull and crossbones decorating it, Cowan entered the building and confronted 20 men lounging inside. An Indian immigrant, Pariyarathu Varghese, 33, came running down a flight of steps and was murdered. Cowan put a pistol...
This magazine is the real obscene stuff. Pictures of naked women lying on bearskin rugs with upthrust breasts may be sexist and demeaning, but pictures of women with khaki shirts opened and cartridge belts across their breasts are perverse. And the photo of a woman whose lip was cut off "with a rusty bayonet," run with an article on war in Rhodesia, belongs in a medical journal or a hysterical editorial to end all war. The mercenaries' stance is that war is grim business but somebody's got to do it, and this picture is hideous, but somebody...
...courses have been offered aboard the 3,300-ton yacht Apollo, the roving residence of Scientology's founder, L. (for Lafayette) Ron Hubbard, 65. Rarely photographed or seen by outsiders, Hubbard turned up briefly in Clearwater last month, portly, in apparent good health and decked out in a khaki jumpsuit and matching tam-o'-shanter. Flamboyant and authoritative, Hubbard barked out orders to a crew of young people, opened a five-figure checking account and paid a tailor $2,800 for some new clothes...
