But the freshmen pressed them rapidly back, and soon Cowling kicked a goal from the field, making the first score for Harvard. They had the Roxbury Latin School eleven for opponents, and easily defeated them by a score of 22 points to 2. '87 had the kick off, and by a fumble of their opponent's full back, they scored a touchdown through Cochrane. Willard scored a goal a few minutes after from a touchdown by Keyes made after some brilliant passing and good running. Two minutes later Bertron made the first touchdown for Yale, from which Terry kicked a goal for Yale. Soon after Terry made two touchdowns, but failed to kick a goal.
