Laura Mars (Faye Dunaway), a punk-chic photographer preoccupied with photographing violent, bloody, and morbid scenes, becomes alarmed when a psychopathic killer begins knocking off her friends by stabbing them in the eye with an ice pick (a rather uninspired and not very subtly executed modus operandi which grates more than it terrifies). Mars has visions of the murders as they are happening and tries frantically to find the killer, using her psychic powers...
...best and absurd at worst. Dunaway plays a fashion photographer whose photos are in because they include images of violence and death. The twist comes when the people Dunaway "shoots" die violent deaths in about the same poses. Apparently, Dunaway has some kind of psychic link with the killer, and the race is on to see who will win out. Don't bother...
...Rogas further investigates the shootings, he begins to feel that his superiors in the police and justice departments are more suspicious of him than they are of the actual killer. He is disturbed by the government's excessive use of electronic surveillance techniques and their insistence that the perpetrators must be left-wing radicals, probably from the universities. The investigation serves as an awakening and education for Rogas in the reality of power politics. Initially annoyed by the labor unions who seem to paralyze society with their incessant strikes, he gradually becomes aware of a far more serious threat...
...More like a short story, Watson. And hardly new. A Mr. Ellery Queen will have already written A Study in Terror in 1966, postulating that Jack was an aristocrat named the Duke of Shires. Other literature will theorize that the killer was a Scotland Yard inspector or a member of the royal family...
