...that you can do to help alleviate climate change. This year, in an agenda-setting piece by Bryan Walsh, we roll up everything into one megaproposal, a kind of 21st century Manhattan Project, using carbon-trading, alternative energy and an efficiency surge to get the most out of every kilowatt we produce--all with the aim of winning the war on global warming...

...demand action from our government and other governments to settle on new rules of the energy game, and demand the same from our Presidential candidates as well. Let's be clear that we are ready to pay a bit more for electricity, perhaps another 2 to 3 cents per kilowatt hour, if it means a big cut in carbon dioxide emissions. Let's also get ready for plug-in hybrids, low-watt light bulbs, green buildings and other energy-saving and emissions-cutting technologies...

...recently received the Nobel Peace Prize. Many Americans would naturally assume Gore follows the green lifestyle he widely promotes, and they would be wrong. Gore and his wife Tipper, whose children all live elsewhere, reside in a behemoth 20-room mansion outside of Nashville that used nearly 23,000 kilowatt-hours last August, more than twice the annual—yes, annual—energy usage of a typical American home. Gore’s preferred mode of transportation between stops on his international publicity tour is his private jet, which spews out CO2 emissions at the rate...

...many Australians, nuclear power brings to mind glowing earth and mutant babies. State and federal laws ban nuclear development, more than 100 municipalities are self-declared "nuclear free zones," and not a kilowatt of the nation's electricity comes from uranium. But in Europe, Asia and North America, millions of people live near nuclear reactors with no more fuss than if they were grain silos. And fueling many of those reactors is Australian uranium...

...technological innovation has driven down the cost of alternative energy sources. Wind farms cover hillsides near Palm Springs and Altamont Pass in California and are springing up in the breezy Midwest and on the Atlantic Coast too. Solar cells can churn out electricity at around 25 to 35 per kilowatt-hour, falling but still a multiple of the cost of energy from coal-fired power plants. Canada is extracting oil from the tar sands of Alberta for an amazingly efficient price of $15 to $20 per bbl., and the technology exists to convert the U.S.'s huge supply of coal...
