...remain skeptical and resist pricing Internet IPOs anywhere near where the market does. Last week Rhythms Netconnections was listed at $21 and closed the day at $69. Two weeks ago, Priceline.com started at $16 and shot to $69. If anything, the pricing of Net stocks is growing more off kilter. The average first-day gain for an Internet IPO has swelled from 30% early last year to 153% the first three months of this year, Commscan reports. Meanwhile, first-day gains in non-Net IPOs generally have been 10% to 20%, in line with historical averages. The gross underpricing...
...silly Hope Floats and the dreadful Practical magic. Sarah's dynamic perspectives and passion for living make for an enchanting character role. However, as convincing a rebel as she may be, Bullock's trademark beauty and genuine nature show through. Funky make-up and an off-kilter personality can't hide the underlying sincerity she brings to many of her films...
...seems almost fitting that when director Stanley Kubrick died at home on March 7, The New York Times felt it necessary to report that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death. Kubrick always had a reputation as something of a misanthrope, a connoisseur of violence and off-kilter ideas. It's no wonder people translated the Kubrick that they saw on the screen to the Kubrick who lived a quiet life as an expatriate in London. Alas, the real Kubrick died a death less bizarre or shocking than that of many of his characters. But his movies, as mundane...
What's even sadder is the talent wasted. Director Tom Shadyac's other films (Ace Ventura: Pet Detective; The Nutty Professor; Liar Liar) are bright, off-kilter farces; scripter Steve Oedekerk wrote Professor. It is a crime against humority that they and Williams (who in a chair next to Letterman is still our most brilliant word surrealist) renounce the work they've practiced with such abandon and invention for Patch's bullying sentimentality. Comics who want to do Hamlet often end up, as here, serving big, sticky slices...
...scenes of romantic comedy and social satire are short-lived, ending abruptly when the movie takes a turn for the serious. Though the humor in the first part of The Alarmist is a little off-kilter, one hopes that it will be honed by the movie's conclusion. But that possibility is obliterated by the new murder mystery plot that takes over in the second half. Whatever credibility the script had up to that point is undermined by the oddity of the shift, making the movie a Quentin Tarantino imitation gone awry; the macabre violence and odd moralistic overtones undercut...
