...looking for a criminal class in the animal kingdom, look no further than the higher male primate. Gorilla males coolly murder infants fathered by other males to free up nursing mothers for breeding; orangutans will resort to rape if their mating overtures are rebuffed; rival gangs of chimpanzees may wage bloody border wars to protect their turf or enlarge their harems. And the evolutionary big brother of all these creatures, the human male, has a rap sheet that's too long to contemplate...
...even stronger statement, calling the attack "an action that violates the U.N charter and international law." Only Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, the countries that benefited most from the Gulf War, appeared to give U.S. actions support. But the Saudi government would not allow U.S. planes based in the Kingdom to participate in the strikes, probably out of fear of retaliation. Many Arab countries feel that the attacks will cause needless suffering to an already impoverished Iraqi population. Others, like Toujan Faisal, a Jordanian member of parliament, view the U.S. strike in the context of President Clinton's re-election campaign...
Like the Main Street that guides customers into Disney's Magic Kingdom, the convention floor today is a construct, a shell, a dim, burnished reflection of what was once reality. They may even call the roll of the states to stir old memories of exciting summer nights from long ago, much as the first notes of Earth Angel or In the Still of the Night can set middle-aged hearts beating faster...
...another wave of ska is cresting. It started in the late '80s with such groups as Fishbone (yes, that group has a new CD out too) and the Toasters. It continues today with No Doubt, which has an uneven album, Tragic Kingdom, in Billboard's Top 10, fueled by a superb new single, Spiderwebs; Rancid, the terrific punk-ska band featured on this year's Lollapalooza tour; Sublime; and numerous ska-compilation CDs that showcase up-and-comers. Two fine ones worth seeking out: Ska the Third Wave Vol. 2, with songs by such acts as Mock Turtle Soup...
