Richard II is the first instalment in Shakespeare's tetralogical study in the essence of the art of kingship. The play is not people with good guys and bad guys; it is a sober study in greys. Richard's downfall is, perhaps, not really tragic (for one thing, he enjoys it too much); but it is pathetic. The true tragedy is that almost all the characters, mixtures of good and bad, are by their circumstances prevented from making the most of their innate potentialities.
