Richard II is the first instalment in Shakespeare's tetralogical study in the essence of the art of kingship. The play is not people with good guys and bad guys; it is a sober study in greys. Richard's downfall is, perhaps, not really tragic (for one thing, he enjoys it too much); but it is pathetic.
