CLAUDE EASTMAN (Dudley Moore) looks like an unhappy man. "In Italy," his wife Daniella (Nastassja Kinski) purrs, "we show our emotions." "In New York," Claude replies, "we just sulk." But ultimately Claude's sulking gives way to delusions of honor regained. Weeks before. Claude was the happiest man around: a successful orchestra conductor and top celebrity, infatuated with his dazzlingly beautiful young wife. "I love her," he says at the beginning of the movie, adding, "but I am going to kill her." What went wrong is the premise for the plot of his latest movie. Unfaithfully Yours...
...Kinski, after several promising performances in Tess and Cat People, gives little here as Claude's sultry wife. Trying to look angry at Claude, she seems only catatonic. Producers Marvin Worth and Joe Wizan perhaps cast Kinski for other attributes which she displays generously and frequently. Expect no eroticism, though: the onetime star of Cat People and snake-loving poster pinup gets no kinkier than seducing Moore with a pig's mask...
DELIVERING equally powerful performances are Lee Marvin as the cold-hearted, vicious American John Osborn, who comes to Russia to buy sables and falls lustfully in love with Irina, played by stunning newcomer Joanna Pacula. Resembling Natassia Kinski with her East European sultry good looks, Pacula proves as good an actress as she is beautiful. Irina, a young Siberian woman who desperately wants to leave Russia, was friends with the three murdered victims. Pacula inculcates a quiet desperation in her Irina, who against her will falls in love with the inquisitive Renko. She monopolizes the screen with her strikingly passionate...
Friendships do not always grow well in the glittery sand of show biz. But Actresses Nastassia Kinski, 22, and Jodie Foster, 20, have become chums despite the glare. After meeting at an Aretha Franklin concert a year and a half ago, Occasional Journalist Foster, a junior at Yale, took up recorder and notebook for a Q. and A. dialogue with Kinski that ran, seemingly forever, in Interview magazine. They are reunited for the film adaptation of John Irving's Hotel New Hampshire, and the friendship continues. Luckily. The script calls for Kinski-who in the film spends the better...
...star, Gerard Depardieu, had lambasted the film even before it played the festival: "The moon is in the gutter, but the movie is in the sewer." At the most vituperative Cannes press conference in memory, Beineix, flanked by his female leads Nastassia Kinski and Victoria Abril, gave as good as he got. "They are called moving pictures, not text," he argued. "My film is a symphony of images...
