...Reasonable Kudos to Michael Kinsley for highlighting the relevance of leaders' religious beliefs [Sept. 17]. Literal dogmatic beliefs of any kind can lead to behavior ranging from the benignly bizarre to the frighteningly dangerous. When people seek truth based on faith rather than evidence, their decisions are connected to reality only coincidentally and are often divorced from it. The risks that we all face when powerful people act on untested beliefs should be obvious. I can only hope that one day the majority will embrace candidates for whom reason, rather than God, is their adviser. Brendan Cameron Vancouver...

While it is true that the right has made political hay from MoveOn.org's ad asking if we should call General Petraeus "General Betray Us," it is also true that most Americans found the ad offensive [Oct. 1]. And Michael Kinsley's defense of the ad was equally offensive. People can disagree with the general, but he deserves respect for his service and high position. Richard Kapanka Greensboro...

...guess Kinsley fears that literal-minded Jewish leaders would ban pork and Catholics would outlaw birth control. And Muslims? Presumably he thinks they would promote terrorism, of course. Fortunately, the majority of Americans are clever enough to see beyond stereotypes. Great leaders successfully balance morality, democracy and freedom of choice regardless of religious faith. J.P. Wirig, Walnut Creek, California...

...Apology Necessary Re Michael Kinsley's article asserting that the American public should accept responsibility for being wrong about the Iraq war [Aug. 13]: The real culpability for Iraq lies not with the public but with the corporate-controlled media so eager to demonstrate patriotism in the wake of the 9/11 attacks that they neglected to scrutinize the government's claims. By repeating the lies of Bush and his henchmen, the media lent credibility to them. The media fail our country and our Constitution when their regard for truth takes second place behind their need to ensure their own prominence...
