SURVIVED. KIRK JONES, 40, unemployed clerk who deliberately plunged over Niagara Falls protected by nothing more than the street clothes and parka he was wearing; becoming the first human to survive the drop without a vessel or a safety device; in Niagara Falls, Canada. Jones clambered over a fence and calmly floated on his back toward the 53-m-high Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side of the cataract, then slipped over the precipice. His only injuries: a few bruised ribs. Jones, who had lost his job after his parents closed the family auto-equipment business, said he was suicidally...

...think pitching is carrying this club? Guess again. Jason Schmidt has been outstanding, yes. But after that, the staff is filled with question marks. Kirk Rueter and Jesse Foppert? Sidney Ponson has been average since being traded. Jerome Williams is the team’s only other credible starter—and if Williams is your No. 2 starter, you’ve got problems, even if you’ve got Albert Pujols on your team. But not Barry Bonds...

...mention all the stuff that blows up, it's surprising that so few filmmakers have itched to put it on the screen. And when they do, it is usually The Odyssey they turn to. That picaresque travelogue through the wilder outposts of ancient Greece has inspired ordinary films (Kirk Douglas in a mid-'50s Ulysses), funny ones (the Coen brothers' O Brother, Where Art Thou?) and one masterpiece (Theo Angelopoulos' Ulysses' Gaze, a mesmeric synopsis of a century of Greek history). But where's The Iliad? Hard to find, except in the 1956 Helen of Troy, a sober retelling from...

...Roots are making some changes. The group plans to start recording a new album this month, for release next year. A guitarist, Kirk Douglas (nope, not that Kirk, and yes, he's heard the jokes), has been added to the core lineup--Thompson, vocalist Black Thought, keyboardist Kamal and bassist Hub. Another guitarist, Martin Luther (not that one either), will also play on some cuts...

...course, it helps that Metallica is one ferocious band. In the five years since their last record, guitarist Kirk Hammett and drummer Lars Ulrich have clearly been listening to lots of System of a Down--loud-soft dynamics are all over St. Anger. But no one in music is better at whipping up hurricanes out of thin air than these two, and even though most songs clock in at well over seven minutes, they never lose tension or focus. St. Anger will absolutely rock your head, though it would have been nice if it wanted a piece of your brain...
