Sontag's earlier novels have met a mixed reception, and not just in Bull Durham. Though she builds an absorbing puzzle in The Benefactor (1963), in parts of Death Kit (1967) the scientific instrument of her prose is never quite equal to a musical instrument of the imagination. But in her more recent short stories, many of them collected in I, etcetera (1978), she triumphs, neatly drawing thought into the shapes of feeling. In San Diego last week U.S. Customs agents seized Atlantis II, an $80 million research vessel once used to explore the wrack of the Titanic, after a routine search turned up traces of pot in the shaving kit of a crew member along with two marijuana pipes. The ship was returned, but only when its owner, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, agreed to send Customs officials a letter supporting the antidrug campaign and promising to tighten security. Rowntree Mackintosh, the maker of Kit Kat bars, is under attack from two Swiss companies seeking a larger share of the world chocolate market.
