...long time the near universal judgment on Salvador Dali was that he had outlived himself. The Surrealist work he did from 1929 to 1939 was brilliant and durable. After that came decades of repetition and kitsch, the years of his collaborations with Walt Disney-- never completed--and his magazine ads for Elsa Schiaparelli lipstick. It didn't help that from early on he was art's state-of-the-art goofball, the guy who would show up in public in a deep-sea diving suit or a Rolls- Royce filled with cauliflowers. ...band owes to Björk’s Icelandic ’80s band the Sugarcubes, for both groups’ consciousness of (and commitment to) the fact that their translations might not translate so well into English. But Total is all synth, bips, beeps, and Euro-kitsch nostalgia like the faux-Gainsbourg “Orange Mécanique,” in which the woman plays the narrator, her moody tones accompanied by “Melody Nelson”-like bits of soprano...

...music is so gleefully esoteric that it can’t be taken at face value and so opaque that it doesn’t make a statement. A decent parallel is early Beck: obscure, illogical, culturally hyper-aware, teetering on the verge of kitsch. It’s a pity Ariel Pink doesn’t have Beck’s talent, or this album might have been a lo-fi classic instead of a half-fleshed out concept. The Doldrums is troglodytic music: the detritus of decades pushed underground and reformed into something unsettling and unfit...

...that’s all that it is, and I’m not sure that my fellow students always realize it. In fact, Jon Stewart was recently on CNN’s Crossfire complaining that the news media had sunk to his level of analysis. Somehow, cynicism and kitsch have become much more palatable than logic. In that cultural background, it should be no surprise that students prize a one-line zinger above reason...
