...Beyond Symbols of Support In his column "The Danger of Yellow Ribbon Patriotism" [Aug. 19], Joe Klein stated that there needs to be a public acknowledgment of the agony the war in Iraq has caused. He noted that our troops just want our support. But we Americans can't provide that by wrapping ourselves in the flag, listening to patriotic songs and labeling others un-American. We need to make sure the troops have the right equipment and protection while their families back home have assistance if they need it. If there aren't enough supporters of the war willing...
...military wife, I was touched to see Klein's article. It is almost as if we wives are living in a world different from other Americans'. We live with sheer terror 24/7 while our husbands are deployed in Iraq. Yet the rest of the country keeps on enjoying freedom and spoiled lifestyles. Thank you for recognizing what we "ghosts" are experiencing and for giving us a voice. Ami Raggio Camp Lejeune, North Carolina...
...Klein said antiwar protester Cindy Sheehan and her group have "struck a chord, despite her naive politics and the ideology of some of her supporters." Perhaps in a year or two we will read in TIME about the "naive use of power and politics" by the Bush Administration. Richard Spotswood Chicago...
...Thank you, Joe Klein. i agree there is much more the government and the rest of us could do for our troops. Ordinary people can help by going to websites like booksforsoldiers.com, treatsfortroops.com and adoptaplatoon.org. Since adopting several soldiers in Iraq and one in Afghanistan, I have learned so much about their sacrifices. Every casualty becomes real to me, since I am worried that it could be one of "my" soldiers. How can we possibly leave them and their families to wonder whether their sacrifices are appreciated? Kendra Ryan St. Paul, Minnesota...
...read Klein's column with interest and sympathy. American commentators assume that the U.S. has to stay in Iraq now because it is the only nation capable of sorting things out. But peace in Iraq cannot be achieved by the use of U.S. arms, and any so-called Iraqi institutions set up by the U.S. will never have credibility. Iraqis aren't stupid. They can spot a puppet government as easily as the rest of us. The option that must be explored is bringing in other-perhaps even Arab-countries or the U.N. to try to bridge the gap. That...
