...Yasser Arafat and calls the two "a dangerous couple." As for convincing undecideds that Netanyahu is up to the job, the Likud's greatest obstacle is his relative inexperience; his only public service has been as charge at the Israeli embassy in Washington, U.N. ambassador, Deputy Foreign Minister and Knesset member. To make the 47-year-old candidate appear more statesmanlike, Likud ads place him in a wood-paneled, Oval Office-like setting. Playing off Netanyahu's military stint as a commander in an elite special-forces unit, the Likud zeroes in on his seriousness about security. "Many...

JERUSALEM: The war of words between Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres and opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu heated up, as Peres accused the Likud leader of sending secret messages to Syrian President Hafez Assad. The messages, Peres told the Knesset yesterday, say Israel will be ready to trade land for peace if Likud wins the parliamentary elections later this year. Netanyahu denied the charges, calling them "a big bluff." Jerusalem bureau chief Lisa Beyer reports: "This accusation dates back to Rabin, who also accused Netanyahu of sending such messages. In an interview with the Jerusalem Post last week, explains Slater, Mrs. Rabin ruled out the possibility of a run for the Knesset or accepting the U.S. ambassorship. "But she seemed not quite as sure about the job of President of the State. That's a ceremonial job and she seemed to be sending out a signal that she could do something like that. It's very unlikely that she will take...

...government. But the first postassassination poll, published Friday in the newspaper Yediot Aharonot, showed that Rabin's successor, acting Prime Minister Shimon Peres, would win 54% of the votes if an election were held today; Netanyahu would take only 23%. The poll also indicated that if a new Israeli Knesset were elected now, Labor would win 46 seats and Likud 30. That would be a relatively small change from the lineup in the current Knesset (Labor, 44 seats; Likud, 32) but a very big change from earlier polls, which showed Likud heading for a majority...
