After then-Dean of the Faculty Jeremy R. Knowles resigned in 2002, Summers appointed the search committee members unconstrained by Faculty nominations. Nor did that committee as a whole discuss specific candidates, only offering general feedback on the qualities it looked for in a dean.
Delaying the review until there is a new dean of the Faculty also makes no sense in terms of continuity of governance. A new dean does not fundamentally change the institution of the Faculty but merely its leadership. Just as new presidents of the United States have to execute laws...
Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences created the predecessor to the Center for Nanoscale Systems in January 1999, when then-Dean of the Faculty Jeremy R. Knowles sought to facilitate cutting-edge research in this field.
Both Jeremy R. Knowles and Henry Rosovsky, two of Kirby’s predecessors, served for just over 10 years each. Rosovsky was dean from 1973 to 1984, and Knowles was dean from 1991 to 2002.
They both announced their resignations early enough for replacements to be found before they stepped down. Rosovsky made his announcement more than a year in advance, and Knowles announced his decision on Feb. 11, 2002.
