The son of a professor of philosophy of law at the University of Moscow, Kistiakowsky (pronounced Kiss-tuh-kof-ski), volunteered for the White Russian army during the Russian civil war, served in the infantry and tank corps. In his two years of service, he almost died of typhus, was caught up by the Red army tide.
